Paint!

This is a watercolor from the day kyle took me out on Saguaro Lake... it is now hanging at his desk at work.

This painting is from the Jesse James trail up in Prescott, AZ. Megan took me on an amazing hike through the mountains and I will be doing many paintings from what I saw there. This is not finished...

An experiment with color, lots and lots of color.

My first watercolor painting, this is the view from my front porch. Used prismacolor pencils and winston waters.

Oil Painting and Sculpture

Here are a couple update snapshots. Here is the oil painting I started about a week ago, very near finished.

Also, I am making a skull/muscle sculpture to study the human head for my anatomy 2 class. It very fun and is helping me learn past alot of the proportion problems of the head.

Anti-gravity redone

I posted my antigravity sketch over at wolfpack... this is the same one with a little more time put into it. I realized how overly saturated my blues were and it killed the depth of it. Hope you like!

New painting...

Here are some thumbs and a final sketch for the new oil painting i am doing... the theme for the class painting was "alien landscape" and i pushed it towards an antigravity planet. although there must be gravity if there is atmosphere which i sketched in but hey, its alien!

I think i got a bit carried away on this. After some time i decided to relate it to the wolfpack sketch theme anti-gravity, i swear it wasn't planned haha.

update

sooo things have been slowing down on my project but today i made a breakthrough on the story... things are changing alot, i will give details soon but this is going to be the main character. he is a scientist from the future... yes the future and he has a pet, its looking to be a robot but im not so sure yet.

ok basically the new story is something like a sci-fi bill and ted's excellent adventure! woohoo, and this scientist is the "bill and ted" of my story, and instead of a history final the scientist needs the help of the greatest ancients to save the world from the big bad dood.

im shooting to have everything finished before i head back to ohio, so that means less then a month. ooo. enjoy the future updates...

Tuesday, July 22, 2008

Viking Samurai... warrior haha

So jumping around between characters to get initial ideas out. I need to scan everything but here are a couple of sketches for another one of the characters. the bottom pencil sketch is a last samurai study, and the paint sketch was something that looked alot cooler in my head but its not finished yet...

Color color....color!

so something clicked tonight. realized i have been working far too hard on colors and remembered something i learned from good old ryan church(DVD not real life...unfortunately)

the way he goes from "lightless" scene to "pouring the light on" as he puts it is really a trick of the program... along with a little bit of color theory which is what clicked tonight when i was checking out thom tenery's blog... it took two masters(probably more actually) to make me realize how important changes in color temperature and hue our in space. as well as local colors of objects...

so i quickly went back and applied my new and past knowledge to this piece to see what would happen... restarted from black and white and got to this color finish in about 25 minutes. im not sure i pulled it off haha, but i think im on the right track. i would love to explain further if anyone would like to hear/read, plus it would probably help myself to clear things up.

Apache Cafe

Found an awesome place to go do figure drawing here in atlanta. Apache cafe... every monday has models, loud music, artist's work and cheap booze. $5 cover, im in...!

Here are a couple of the sketches I did, realized how rusty I am with figures now...

Tried to post these last night but blogger was being a turd... time for some more movie studies

Sunday, July 13, 2008

Last Samurai

If I become a drawing teacher some day I will make watching movies homework. Seriously I got about 5 minutes into the movie and realized what I have been missing all along...

Movies are perfect reference/studies for:
-figures/poses/badass fight references :)
-lighting
-composition
-scale

...hmm. looking over my movie collection and realizing I have a wealth of work ahead of me...!

and yes thats tom cruise haha

mech pencil...

so decided to pick up a mechanical pencil today, i thank my design director at work for recommending it. its been a while but i did begin on a mechanical pencil. i think i'm back, and never leaving again... wow, here are a couple of doodles from my free time today, the stuff from work i couldnt post up but should be some more stuff up later tonight.

...experimenting

did a quick paint over of part of one of the sketches i liked.

I am the Warrior!

So here are some sketches for the first character, and also the leader.
He is from the predynastic/paleo era. Neanderthal...
-he is wisest, oldest, and most light hearted of the bunch. like the gandalf.
no name yet....

Here is a quick rundown of my initial ideas for the story... meant to be merely a portfolio piece at the time. any thoughts would help...

Modern day to near future:
5 heroes/warriors from different eras in the world's history, including the future

-brought together by a higher power to find out and stop the force that is destroying the world...
-this project will cover their journey through different lands, creature encounters and people/allies they meet along the way
-hell yeah!

Revisions

I went back and reworked into these two robots. Basically did a quick tighten up job on each. Tried to increase the amount of depth by adding detail and contrast to things in the foreground while leaving the background loose. Also added some extra feet strength on the the Dino Bot...

#4 Swamp

I started this as a sketch inspired by one of Sammy's over at CA.org. Decided to add a figure and it really resembles me, on steroids I think.

#3

Was running today and in Atlanta it seems as if every tree is revolting against the man made elements around them...really cool I say. So I decided to do a sketch and try to emulate a feeling of trees attacking, very very slowly haha.

#2

Going to be doing some forest/tree studies for a bit from reference. Thing is, no reference on this one... uhh
